Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has strongly called for full membership for the State of Palestine in the United Nations.
He made the remarks on Monday (September 22) after a summit on Palestine recognition organized by France in New York. He also raised the issue again at the UN General Assembly.
Sanchez said that although the conference is a milestone in history, it is not the end, but only the beginning. He believes that Palestine should be given full UN membership as soon as possible to ensure equal status with other states. At the same time, he emphasized the importance of stopping the ongoing brutality in Gaza and paving the way for peace.
The left-wing Spanish Prime Minister is known as a strong critic of the Israeli military operation in Gaza. In May this year, Spain, Ireland and Norway together officially recognized the State of Palestine.
Spain’s stance has strained diplomatic relations between Madrid and Tel Aviv. Recently, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sarr called Sanchez an “anti-Semite” and a “liar.” In response, the Spanish government summoned the Israeli diplomat posted in Madrid.
